Some residents were forced to leave their pets behind when they tried to escape the collapse of Sunrise Floridas Champlain Towers South.Residents and animal lovers in the area are worried about their pets now that the remaining apartment building has been demolished by Controlled Demolitions, Inc.Nearly 4,300 people have signed an online petition opposing demolition of animals until they are safe.Julie Mir, a Miami resident, signed the petition and said that she had emailed Gov. Ron DeSantis, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue are available to rescue any animals trapped inside.Miro stated that if there had been people there, they would have found a way. They don't think animals are as valuable.Dahlia Kanes from Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation stated that it is believed that five dogs and cats as well as a guinea pig, some parakeets and some other animals are still inside the building.She claimed she spoke to a woman whose Daisy, a dog and two cats, were living in her living room at the time of the collapse. Daisy is the name given to the dog by the Edgar Gonzalez family. Gonzalez's wife and her daughter are in hospital. He is still missing.It is not safe to move beyond the first floor.Levine Cava stated that many people in the community raised concerns about the pets of the buildings. It is important to clarify that three searches were conducted by search and rescue, including a primary, secondary, and tertiary. They found no animals. They did a sweep with cameras, but found no animals.On June 24, firefighters got Rigatoni, a fourth-floor family dog, out to the mother and daughter. This was within the first hour after the collapse. However, she said that the building is too unstable for crews to enter to rescue them.She said that the reality is very grim.
