The greeting ends with three words: "...the football player." After being asked a lot of questions about the NFL, he moves on. He is a veteran of the NFL and is relatively new at acting. It is understandable. His past is a great icebreaker. Davis also hopes it will one day be retired.Given how productive Davis was in his brief time with the NFL, this day may come sooner than expected. He said that he would likely appear in many projects over the years and people will forget about me being a player. I think of Terry Crews and The Rock [Dwayne John] as actors. You don't see them as athletes because they are involved in so many projects. It will most likely happen to me."Davis has good reasons to believe this. After 14 seasons of catching 583 passes with the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos, Davis retired from the NFL in 2019. Davis has appeared in films starring Bruce Willis and Luke Wilson, as well as John Malkovich.Vernon Davis receiving direction from Adam Sigal at "The Chariot" set. Davis was an actor before he retired. He appeared in three movies and four TV shows in his playing days. (He would shoot the roles in the offseason, but he wouldn’t discuss acting in-season). He began taking acting classes in his early years with the 49ers. He is not as experienced as his colleagues in acting.Davis stated, "Initially, when I first met Bruce, and I'm just sitting there watching him, I was like, Wow! This is crazy.'" You feel a bit intimidated at first, but then you start to feel more comfortable and it becomes easier to accept the challenge. It's almost like walking into the NFL and seeing all the guys you have seen on TV. It's like being a rookie when you see these guys." "I feel like a rookie when I watch these guys."Davis has grown in his second career because of all the hard work he did in such a short amount of time.Alex Kane, founder of TMG, said that "He has grown leaps-and-bounds." He was very stiff when he came in two years back. He is now a true actor. His insecurity has decreased. He has learned how to use the camera. He moved from a structured industry -- how to run your route and lift your uniform, etc. -- to a free-form one. An athlete must accept that there is no right or wrong. They can only choose what works and what doesn't.Davis hopes to expand his acting career. He is a bouncer in Gasoline Alley and a character who cares for zoo turtles. In "The Chariot," a comedy science-fiction film, he has telekinetic powers. He watched "Edward Scissorhands", "The Green Mile" and "Dear Best Friend" to get ready. He was a villain in Dear Best Friend.Kane stated that he will sometimes tell Davis to show off his 6-foot-4, 245-pound frame if it is a romantic role. Sometimes it's all about the art.Kane stated, "Look at how [The] Rock balances quality with muscle." "Vernon's in the process to find that balance.Davis also said he will bring his football mindset to his films. Davis stated that he will break down scripts to work on his behavior -- how to appear more angry, happy, or sad. Davis has learned to not blink so that his eyes don't distract.Adam Sigal, the director of "The Chariot," stated that he was skeptical about casting a player football in what he called a "quirky independent film". He met Davis.Vernon Davis and Thomas Mann were on the set for "The Chariot." They have acted in five movies. Three more are scheduled to begin shooting soon. Photo courtesy of Olexiy KhryvychSigal stated that Vernon told him that despite playing football and loving it, he felt like an actor. He was also a great athlete. He was passionate about the subject matter and worked hard to create the character he played. He was a great actor on set. He took direction well, and brought a lot to the character.Davis has no plans to slow down. Kane stated that they have discussed the path Davis is on and how to get involved in production companies. TMG has produced multiple films in Fitzgerald including "Gasoline Alley" Davis has appeared in TMG's two movies, and will be a part in other films, acting or producing.Kane stated that Kane is following the same path as Brad Pitt and Mark Wahlberg. Kane said that Kane is not an actor who waits for Hollywood to cast him. Instead, he is being himself and partnering up with someone to build the brand he wants. He understands the importance of Wahlberg's and Pitt's success and what they have control over, as they must present themselves in a certain manner to their fans. Vernon already has that going for his. Because he is able to dictate what he wants to do, he is already on the trajectory of [The] Rock and a Wahlberg. This is the plan.Davis stated, "I would love the opportunity to do some of what [The] Rock does." I like his work ethic. I know exactly what I am doing and where it is taking me. It's all there.
