Roberto Martinez refuses to comment on Belgium future following Euro 2020 quarter-final exit: 'It's too raw'

Roberto Martinez said that he will talk about his future after Belgium was eliminated from Euro 2020 by Italy in Munich Friday night. The Red Devils were eliminated from the competition at the quarterfinal stage. This was the same as five years ago when they were defeated 3-1 by Wales.Lorenzo Insigne pushed the Azzurri to the final four, as perennial favorites Belgium were again selected for the role of bridesmaid.Martinez was granted a contract extension by Belgium to last year, which he will continue to play in the 2022 World Cup. However, the 47-year old has been linked to a return to club soccer this summer.Martinez answered a question about his future after his team's defeat by 2-1. He said, "Obviously, this is a moment where it is very, very difficult for me to talk anything other than the defeat and that the Euros are over.""As I said, at the moment it's still too raw. It could also be seen as emotional, and I don't want to add anything."At the moment all I want is to look back at this tournament and say that the players did nothing wrong. It's the exact opposite.Image: Romelu Lukaku scored the fourth goal of this tournament"They did everything possible to get us as far (at Euro 2020). Now is the time for analysis and evaluation. However, I am currently feeling sadness and disappointment at the moment.Roberto Mancini's team had been led by Nicolo Barella for 31 minutes. Insigne then doubled that lead. Romelu Lukaku's penalty during the first-half stoppedpage time gave hope to the Belgians, but they couldn't get back on level terms. It was despite Belgium's best efforts during the second half that Italy won the match and extended their unbeaten streak to 32 games. They also became the first European Championship team to win 15 consecutive matches.Martinez said, "The emotions are what you can really imagine, really – sadness and disappointment - because these players do not deserve to be out this tournament."They have done an amazing job in preparing us to take each step, day by day, since the beginning of this tournament. Unfortunately, we were faced with an extremely strong side (Italy) today. It was two very strong teams in the knockout phase. Unfortunately, our margins were not favorable."The Spaniard said that Belgium's campaign plans were affected by injuries to Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, and Axel Witsel.Image: Belgium's Golden Generation was again disappointed in the quarters"The situation with Axel Wisel, Kevin De Bruyne, and Eden Hazard going into the tournament, I believe we managed it very, very well. You could see the attitude of these players. They were a great help throughout the tournament. They were a great help from the first time they came to the pitch."Obviously injuries do happen, and it was unfortunate that Eden couldn't be there (against Italy). It was exemplary to watch Kevin De Bruyne putting in all he could to play 90 minutes for his national team, and showing that he was willing to help the group."So, I believe that every Red Devil fan can feel a sense of pride and understanding in knowing that these players tried their best to achieve what they wanted. Unfortunately, today we were faced with an extremely good team (Italy), and the narrow margins won't be able to stop them. This is football, and it's not a big difference.Mancini: It's still a long roadImage: Roberto Mancini keeps his feet on the ground ahead of the semisRoberto Mancini was thrilled for his Italy team, who defeated top-ranked Belgium in the final to win 2-1. This set up a Euro 2020 semifinal match with Spain."We deserved to win. After Friday's victory in Munich's quarterfinals, he stated that the boys had done an extraordinary job."We suffered only in the final 10 minutes, because we were tired and had already spent a lot. We could have scored more goals.Image: Italy was deserving their victory over BelgiumMancini stated that his players should savor the victory before thinking about Tuesday's match against Spain, three-time European champions. He said, "We didn’t have a minimum goal. We wanted to do our best. The road is still long. There are two games left, we’ll see what happens.""Spain?" Let's celebrate this win, then we'll reflect on it. My boys were excellent, congratulations!Thibaut Courtois, Belgium's goalkeeper, was disappointed but gave credit the Italians."This is a difficult game, but we knew it would be tough. He said that we had two chances but their goalkeeper saved well and that they gave away the first goal a little too easily."It could have been any way, but Italy won here."Richards: It was well deserved to winImage: Spain will face Italy in Tuesday's semi-finalsBBC: Micah Richards, Sky Sports' Micah RichardsRoberto Martinez is a hard man to watch. He puts so much effort and time into getting results. But it was not to be."You must applaud the Italians. Although I was divided on who I wanted to win today's contest, Italy won the final vote. They were amazing throughout."Belgium had their chance, but Italy defended so well. Doku was dazzling and he didn’t deserve to be on losing side.Schedule for Euro 2020 Semi-finals: Kick-off times & venuesTuesday, July 6Semi-final 1: Italy Vs Spain; Kickoff 8pm (Wembley London)Wednesday, July 7Semi-final 2 - Ukraine or England vs Czech Republic of Denmark or Denmark; Kickoff 8pm (Wembley London)
