Lovecraft Country canceled at HBO

The cable channel decided not to order another season of 2020's supernatural series. The series was adapted from Matt Ruff's novel, and Misha Green wrote most of the script. It explored Black life in 20th-century America through a horror lens, but not always with magic and monsters. Our own review of the series premiere was very complimentary of the show, praising it as a joy for fans of [H.P. Variety speculates that the cancellation could be due to a lack of material. The first season, which starred Jurnee Slomollett, Jonathan Majors and Courtney B. Vance, was a complete and thorough coverage of all the events in Ruffs book. Ruffs' most recent novel, 88 Names, was not a deeper dive into the show/novels roots, unlike Big Little Lies.Green had already addressed the question, and Underground producer told Deadline last year that she had some ideas for the show's future. Green stated that she envisioned a second season that would continue the spirit of Matt Ruffs novel, continuing to reclaim genre storytelling space that people have traditionally been excluded from, when the season (now-series finale) aired. She noted that shed wanted the story of the first season to end, but opened a new door for the second.
