The US may soon force airlines to refund passengers for delayed bags

The retribution that travelers who were victim to baggage claims may soon be available. According to the Associated Press, a new proposal by the Department of Transportation (DOT), would require airlines that they refund fees for checked bags if they aren't delivered in a timely manner to passengers. The DOT would also require that fees for additional services, such as Wi-Fi access, be refunded to passengers if they don't receive them during the flight. The current rules require that bags be refunded if they are lost. However, airlines should compensate passengers for any reasonable incidental expenses incurred due to baggage delays. New proposal requires airlines to issue refunds for baggage delays exceeding 12 hours after a passenger's domestic flight touches down or within 25 hours of an arrival on international flights.New rules are designed to improve competition among airlines and give passengers more control. Over 100,000 people complained last year to the government about airline service. Many of them claimed that airlines refused to refund customers where possible.Although the new proposal will be issued by the DOT in the coming days, it won't take effect until at most next summer.
