US designates 2 Salvadorans for helping China, corruption

SAN SALVADOR (EL SOL) Two Salvadoran officials were named by the U.S. government under the corrupt and undemocratic agents report Friday, for allegedly aiding China and profiting off their decisions.According to the U.S Embassy in El Salvador, Ezequiel milla was alleged to have abused his authority in order to sell Perico in the Caribbean to "agents of China for personal gain."Luis Wellman Carpio is the other current magistrate of El Salvador's Supreme Electoral Tribunal. Wellman Carpio is accused of allowing Chinese malign influence in El Salvador's February midterm elections. He also improperly granted contracts to a Chinese company for large amounts of electoral material and the tabulation.Milla, the former mayor in La Union, and Wellman Carpio have been linked to the conservative Arena party.Jean Manes was the Charg d'affaires at the U.S Embassy in El Salvador. He downplayed its international implications and claimed it was just a case of corruption.Manes stated, "That is not what the point was." It is clear that if someone receives money in bribes or any other abuse of their government position, they are receiving illicit funds. She did however acknowledge that the U.S. is worried about Chinese actions in the area. There have been many instances in which China has taken actions that were not transparent and have been detrimental to the citizens of certain countries. The reports often result in the cancellation of visas and the ban on entry to the United States for those who are designated. Both cases share a common denominator: Bo Yang, a Chinese businessman who purchased the island in November 2019, and whose Gold Will Industrial Limited S.A. de C.V. provided the electoral services.
