Hideki Matsuyama tests positive for COVID-19; status for The Open in question

Hideki Matsuyama, the Masters champion, tested positive for COVID-19 Friday. He withdrew his participation in the Rocket Mortgage Classic to question his eligibility for The Open in two week's time.Bob Turner, Matsuyama's agent/interpreter, stated that it was too early to predict the ramifications and that details are being discussed.A player who is positive for COVID-19 in the PGA Tour can return to competition 10 business days after the onset or if the symptoms are not based on consecutive negative tests. This would be Monday at Royal St. George's, Sandwich, England.The R&A protocols for The Open differ from one another. The organization has not yet responded to inquiries for clarification. Players are required to stay in "buddy" bubbles throughout The Open. They will not be allowed to go to restaurants, grocery stores, or meet with players outside the venue.Others could also be expelled from the tournament if they are found to have been in close proximity with someone with COVID.Matsuyama stated in a statement by the PGA Tour that "it's disappointing to hear this news" and had to withdraw from the Rocket Mortgage Classic. "I will take all necessary precautions to ensure safety and health of everyone. I am grateful for everyone's concern and thank you all in advance. I wish you a speedy recovery and a return to competition.Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Matsuyama played in Thursday's first round. They were due to play Friday as a pair.The PGA Tour announced this week that its COVID-19 testing program would end in the week of the 3M Open. This will take place in three weeks. Players with symptoms will still be able get tested.Matsuyama's symptoms were not immediately apparent. He was also part of a contact-tracing scenario that would have had him tested every day, if he wasn't already fully vaccinated.Matsuyama has been on the course four times since winning Masters. His best finish was a tie for 23rd at PGA Championship. Two weeks ago, he tied for 26th at the U.S. Open.
