Sumter National Forest trail camera photo of a massive black bear, which could be one of the largest in South Carolina, captured it.The bear is shown on its hind legs with its head up, mouth open and mouth wide as if he were roaring.Allen Shelor, a deer hunter, claims it was taken in Oconee County's Mountain Rest area on June 25, eight miles from his Walhalla home. Oconee County, which is wedged between Georgia and North Carolina, is the state's westernmost county.He is huge. Shelor said that this is the largest bear she's ever seen, and she grew up in the area. McClatchy News:It is hard to estimate how large. He is estimated to weigh in at 600 pounds. I didn't have a gun with me when I went to get the camera. This makes you think and allows you to see that he is out there.Shelor regrets not having his camera on video but his photo still shows what the bear was doing just minutes before. He noticed that there was something red on the bear's paws and chest.He was in a blackberry field, eating. The Blue Ridge Parkway as well as the Appalachian Trail have had to place temporary restrictions on camping because of aggressive bear incidents.According to the state, the average weight of a South Carolina male bear is 350 pounds. The State reports that the state has shot the record at 609 pounds in 2013, and numerous bears between 590 and 597 lbs have been killed in recent years.Lee Boling, his sister, posted Shelors' photo on Facebook.
