The Tomorrow War on Amazon Prime: Chris Pratt's new movie, explained, today!

From the beginning, it is important to explain The Tomorrow War. You may be wondering what a Tomorrow War is. Chris Pratt appears to be the main character. Is it a comedy?AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe trailer explains that soldiers 30 years in the future recruit 2021 citizens to fight an alien invasion. High school teacher, family man, and Iraq War veteran Dan Forester (Pratt), are among the latest waves of civilians-turned cannon fodder. He encounters many twists and turns along the way. (Spoilers ahead.)They're actually sending people into the future! Instead of using their knowledge, they are sending people into the future to stop this alien invasion from ever occurring. This is the biggest logic flaw in movies. It is obvious that the purpose of a worldwide draft (even though we don't see what's happening in other countries than America) is to preserve the future population, even if it means killing today's citizens.AdvertisementWhy can't they keep going back in time to recruit more people, if the technology exists to allow people to travel through time? They could also go back to Civil War and recruit Abe Lincoln.Unfortunately, the time-travel technology is somewhat shaky so they couldn't. They claim that even if there was a crisis, they would still test it on animals and not beam people into the future. Their abilities are very limited, regardless of plot convenience. People of 2051 cannot go back to 2021. Every minute the 2051 people spend in 2021 passes in 2051. This means that humanity is moving closer to the end of time in both timelines. A new generation of draftees is able to be re-enamed into the future every time they are sent. This makes it closer to the end than the previous group of soldiers.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe movie shows one scene in which a Foresters unit is transported to the wrong coordinates mid-air. This causes almost all of them to die.Wait, Chris Pratt can't go splat if that is what happens. He lands conveniently in a swimming-pool.Let's just keep on sending people to the future plan that actually works. It's not the ultimate plan. Forester learns that the future military official with whom he is working isgasp!his grown up daughter, who is developing a toxin capable of eliminating the aliens. As the 2051 people have been destroyed by the aliens, the toxin must be brought into the present to be mass-produced.AdvertisementThey end up returning to the present.Yes. However, it was not before an extremely confusing sequence in which Dan promised his future-daughter he would return for her and rescue him right before she is eaten by aliens.AdvertisementHe claims he will save her by returning to 2021 to mass-produce the toxin, and then returning to the past.Yes.Is he capable of doing that?He returns to 2021 and discovers that the time-travel hole is closed because the humans from the future who invented time travel have been defeated. You might think that there is no way back to the past. He then has the toxin mass-produced and he and his friends travel to Russia.AdvertisementThey are going to Russia for a reason. The next twist is that the aliens didn't come to Earth in the future. They've been around since the beginning, but they were trapped in Russia's ice. The future will be when the ice melts, and the aliens are free. How did aliens become frozen beneath the ice? They were actually being transported by another alien race, but they crashed in Russia. It is speculated that the aliens in command of the ship planned to weaponize the aliens responsible for making 2051 hellscape, so they could conquer other planets. However, it remains to be seen if the characters were really trying to reach Earth. It's like the movie X-Files, where the aliens were also present all along, but had been frozen under the ice.AdvertisementIt's possible!Subscribe to the Slate Culture newsletter and receive the best movies, TV, books, music, etc. directly to your inbox. You have described a world where people must unite to stop an apocalypse caused by melting of the ice cap.Climate change is not the main focus of the movie, aside from the fact global warming and its subsequent melting of the ice is a literal plot point. The heroes' solution is not to stop global warming, but to mitigate its effects by killing aliens. Many of the events suggest that the government is not effective and we should be armed ourselves. Then they kill all the aliens from the past?AdvertisementYup! They exterminate the aliens of the past so that the apocalyptic world no longer exists.Hmm. Hmm.Conventional time-travel logic, which philosophers approve of, is yes. No.What is Tomorrow Wars' time-travel logic?AdvertisementAdvertisementWe can just fudge it to continue the story. Chris Pratt is able to save the day.Everything is fine.Yes. Yes. The aliens are still dead and there is not a single wrinkle in the timeline that could cause the universe to collapse or prompt the Time Variance Authority (TVA) to bust Chris Pratt. Is Chris Pratt funny?AdvertisementI guess so. You might be a Pratt-head. He's funny enough. However, most of the comedy duties go to Sam Richardson, the Veep actor who does his best with writing that doesn't fit the rest of this movie. To be clear, Sam Richardson is a favorite in our house. This isn't a joke.No. It's funny how two of the most hilarious actors, Mary Lynn Rajskub & Mike Mitchell, are killed off so young. Is the movie entertaining? No. Although there are some great moments, watching them all invade an army base creates an eerie feeling similar to seeing an infestation of insects. The movie is too long (2 hours 20 minutes), and the comedy moments are rare. Also, the story is silly as it is. You can stream it on Amazon Prime, so you have already paid the entry fee. Don't think I came here from the future to warn!
