Charlize Theron, The Old Guard Photo - Aimee Spinks/NETFLIXThe Old Guard still holds a special place in the Netflix's original action films, even a year later. The Charlize-Theron-directed streamer, directed by Gina Princebythewood and written by Greg Rucka using his original comic, was a well-made, visually appealing superhero action movie that arrived online just in time to ease some of the pain from the COVID-19 lockdowns. Tom Breihan wrote in his Age Of Heroes column that the Old Guard felt like a balm at a time when many people felt very mortal, but were also adjusting to a new type of crushing monotony. It arrived exactly when it was supposed to.AdvertisementThis raises the question: Will there be a sequel to the franchise that is released in non-pandemic circumstances? Netflix seems to be banking on that, Variety reports on a conversation with Theron where she said that a script was being written for the sequel to the first film. (Which was, incase you had forgotten, about an immortal team of warriors doing their unkillable A Team thing in the darker corners of the mercenary universe. Theron noted that filming will begin in the first half of 2022. So it's possible that we might see Andy Of Scythia and her co-stars KiKi Leayne and Marwen Kenzari once more solve violent problems by letting them get shot in the head.Netflix, for all its merits, has always been bullish about Old Guard. It issued its usual stream of statements about Old Guard's 72 million views in the first weeks of its release and its place on its list of 10 most-watched films. This information is suspect because Netflix does not allow us to see the metrics unless it makes the company sound great. Fair enough: Netflix's announcement that filming will begin soon feels more tangible as a vote of confidence.
