AP Photo/Jack DempseyEugene Chung claimed that he was told he wasn't the right minority while interviewing for a job as a coach in the NFL."After many discussions, including with Mr. Chung's representative, we were not able to confirm the exact statement made or by whom and under which circumstances it was made," said the NFL on Thursday.Chung, a Korean American told Nicole Yang the Boston Globe in May about the interview. According to Chung's account, the interviewer said that he was initially not a minority. According to the interviewer, he clarified his statement and stated that he wasn't the right minority."I asked about it, but as soon as the backtracking began, I was like, "Oh no, not, no. No, no. You said it." Chung stated, "Now that we have it out there, let's talk about it." "It was mind-blowing to see that something like this is actually a story in 2021."Chung was selected by the New England Patriots 13th in the 1992 NFL Draft. Chung spent five years in this league and also played for the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and other teams. After playing his professional career, the 52 year-old became a coach and worked with the Kansas City Chiefs' and Philadelphia Eagles' coaching staffs.Chung's claims were made at a time of rising racism and discrimination against Asian Americans. In March 2020, the FBI warned about the emergence of a new trend as the COVID-19 pandemic erupted in the United States.Stop AAPI Hate, a non-profit organization, surveyed 413 people who reported anti-Asian hate incidents to it through November. 71.7 percent of respondents said that anti-Asian discrimination was their greatest source, which is much higher than other pandemic worries.
