If you're skilled enough, even old things can be made new again. One engineer student was able to do just that by tweaking an older Lumia 950 XL Windows Phone in order to run Microsoft's new Windows 11 operating systems. The video above shows an engineering student showing how Windows 11 runs on the Lumia. Although it may look small on a mobile screen, you can still see how Windows 11 works. Surprisingly, the device can be rotated with the Lumia automatically adapting to the orientation change. The Action Center and Start Menu are also visible. This wasn't an easy task. Gustave Monce, an engineering student, said in an interview that getting the drivers to work correctly takes a lot reverse engineering. Monce was joined by 15 others to reach this point, which took them four years. This included previous support for Windows 10X and Windows 10 so Windows 11 was an easy path. The team has created a website where you can follow along with the guides and try the project yourself. However, we recommend against this because it is quite technical. As of now, most Windows elements work fine except for the camera, Windows Hello Face Unlock, and GPU. Some of the features in development include the ability to boot from SD cards. There are forums where you can discuss the project, as well as a Telegram group that allows people to talk about it. You might notice a difference in battery life and performance if you try it out.It is likely that you are not reminded enough that Microsoft discontinued active development of Windows 10 Mobile in 2017 with the Lumia 9500XL. Monce is the one who keeps Windows Phone alive. He shows off the true potential of the hardware and its under-the-hood power that Microsoft has left behind.Editors' Recommendations
