New Google Move Might Complicate Android Apps in Windows 11

Microsoft's new Windows 11 operating platform features the ability to run Android apps through the Amazon App Store. But Google may have made things more complicated.Google has changed its policy and requires app developers to adopt the Android App Bundle standard. This will allow them to move away from APK files that could have been used to sideload Android applications in Windows 11.The change is only for new apps that are listed on Google Play Store beginning August 2021. It does not apply to third-party apps. However, Google provides some important information in its announcement. First, the new Android App Bundle format is going to replace APK as standard publishing format. According to Google, more than 1 million apps already use the Android App Bundle format. This is a great move for Android in the long-term. Google also mentions that the new format will allow for smaller app sizes and security features. However, this could still present a problem in Windows 11.This is because the Amazon App Stores app catalog is very limited. Many people are looking to download popular Android apps that are not available from the Amazon App Stores. Instead, they will use APK files on Windows. Microsoft stated this was possible.Sideloading APKs can pose security risks. However, the reaction from Android and Windows users seems to be quite upsetting. APKs are on the horizon, so it may be more difficult to sideload popular Android applications in Windows 11 when this feature becomes available. Android App Bundle works only with Google Play. This depends on Google Play services which appear to not be supported by Windows 11.Windows 11 will arrive in the fall and includes some new features, as well as Android app support through the Amazon App Store. Two features include a visual redesign and multitasking. Other changes include a revamped Widgets section and improved tablet mode. File Explorer has been redesigned, as well as a new settings app.Beta testing Windows 11 is possible now through the Windows Insider Program. This program does not require Android app support. Microsoft stated that this feature would come at a later date this year.Editors' Recommendations
