This is hell and we are there. Screenshot by Warner Bros.Space Jam fans were anticipating this trailer from the beginning. It basically turned cartoons playing sci-fi basketball in to what if Ready Player One had access to all the Warner Bros. back catalog? But to actually see this Matrix riff live is... well, it's a lot.AdvertisementMovieClips posted a clip from A New Legacy. This is our first extended, good-looking look at a specific moment in the LeBron James/Bugs Bunny vehicle. It's, diplomatically, a nightmare. A long tribute to The Matrixa Warner Media property. Granny (Candi Mio) and Speedy Gonzalez (Gabriel Iglesias), do...something that requires them to be confronted by police before they break out into the requisite slow-mo and kung-fu that any Matrix reference circa 02 would consider mandatory. But in 2021 it just seems incredibly, incredibly repetitive.Ok, okay, I'll admit, the Twitter joke is almost funny in that I, a 30 year old man, don't have the right to make Old Man Yells at Cloud rants about current movies referring to current pop culture. Granny can have her tweets! In a strained, ongoing attempt to speak diplomatically: The continued integration of 2D animated characters in live action reads better than Warners previous attempt with the Tom & Jerry Movie. The actual pastiche, however, is just... sorely, sorely uninteresting. It's that which feels more old-fashioned than Granny talking about her socials. This is a Matrix riff, in the same vein as over twenty years of Matrix songs. Granny bought a Trinity-esque Trinity-esque leather catsuit. After we pan around Granny, she can do the slomo mid-air malay arts pose into a kick. Speedy can do bullet time. This is the most clever thing Speedy does. It's so... boring. The Matrix is yours. The Matrix is yours. You are The Matrix. This seems like a complicated cameo deal, where you have to give only the most basic details to get an homage in.LeBron does at least show up at the end to say hello to Granny, while she's not on screen. We can't miss Space Jam: A New Legacy, which will be available on HBO Max on July 16th and in theatres on July 16.Are you curious about where our RSS feed went. The new one can be found here.
