An exploration of art, nature and technology

Caroline Rothwell, a Sydney-based visual artist, is interested in important conversations about the human interaction with nature through history and their lasting consequences. Her latest work aims to draw attention to the plants we take for granted. She was interested in how technology could be used to help her learn about the natural world by using historical botanical data. With the support of Google Creative Lab Sydney she explored how machine learning could be used to interpret data and archives to create new art. We created Infinite Herbarium together. This web application and participatory art installation allows users to explore an infinite number machine-learning-generated plants. They can also create their own artwork, while learning more about the plants.
