Jun 30, 2021Last week, FlowingData celebrated 14 years of existence. Is it really that old? It's old. This site was created as a place to store class projects. Flat HTML files. JPEG files. Placemarkers in Google Maps Flash Vanilla jаvascriptIt became a place where I could share my experiences with fellow classmates as I was studying from all over the country. Did you see the Infosthetics project? What was the secret to Stamen's map? These infographics are becoming too large.I experimented. My surprise and delight, the stuff I made was found on the internets. Through some strange routes, some of my work ended up in the feeds of my family and friends. I discovered visualization can reach many people and inspire them about data.Statistics emerged from that hateful course. Data also grew. It grew to be a major industry. It was a science. The data grew into visualization. It was once thought of only as an analytical tool, but it evolved into a medium to communicate, express, and tell stories. After finishing my PhD, I was thinking about my future and took job interviews. As the interviewee, you are supposed to impress the interviewers. It was actually the reverse for me. I was searching for someone who could convince me that their offering was better than running FlowingData. I couldn't find anything. So here I am. 6,243 posts, tutorials and links later. You are so kind.Thank you for reading. We appreciate your support. If you are not yet a member and would like to continue the data flow, I would be grateful for your support. I hope to continue this work for many years.
