Governor of Maine Janet Mills opposed legislation that would have made Maine the first state to combat sex trafficking and partially decriminalize prostitution. The bill, which was passed by the state Legislature on party lines, would have reduced penalties for prostitution of people who were sold into the sex industry and provided them with social services and opportunities. It would have increased the punishment for traffickers and pimps who coerce vulnerable people into the underground networks. The Democratic governor stated that she was not convinced that the bill offered the best solution to Maine's trafficking problem. It is known as a trafficking hub, where victims are recruited from the state and sent to major cities on the East Coast like New York and Boston.
