Some of you may know that I have other interests than travel writing. Sometimes, I have to get out of my own way and travel to another place to accomplish those tasks. So I decided to travel to Nottingham to shoot the photo. My first move is to check trains. This is because I prefer to open my laptop and see out the window rather than focusing on the outside world. I can also double-check images while on my way back. When I tried to find a train ticket for a 45-mile single journey and a 90-mile return trip, it was a horrible surprise. This was obtained by running the route through the National Rail Enquiries fare-engine..First, I was a little shocked that first-class tickets were not on sale. The second reason was the sheer price.A few days later, I checked the price of a trip and it was lower than I expected. What is the answer? The little triangle reveals a portion of the issue capability or lack thereof.CrossCountry Trains is the operator that runs trains along this route. They cap capacity and enforce seat reservations. It is difficult to plan short-term travel for people like me, who have to pay for tickets on an Inter-Regional route. This requires precision and dreadful planning. The most convenient rail system feature, walk-up tickets, allows passengers to travel from one point to another. Train companies prefer to shift to an airline model, where they can buy in advance. This can be a great way to save money, but it can also cause problems for walk-up passengers who still make up a significant portion of the passengers. The car is now ready for you. After that, and not considering the coach as a ride, I decided to take my Toyota Aygo with me on the trip. It would take me down the M6, A42, A42 and onto the M1. Then, I would drive onto a local road to a Toton Lane Park and Ride station for the tram into Central Nottingham.Fun, fun and fun on Trams.Because I know I can do without city driving. How much did this cost? It cost me approximately 12 gallons of fuel for me to transport myself and all my photography equipment, and 4.20 to purchase the all-day tram ticket to take me into and out of Nottingham. This is not even a competition compared to CrossCountry's fares, let alone the price of a First-Class ticket.Railroad pricing has been strange from the beginning. However, the railway pricing is not helping. The price of return fares can sometimes be 10p higher than single fares. This is why I found splitting a ticket fare to save me lots of money. It seems that the incapacity on routes and restrictions on walk-up fares are going to harm rail travel, especially Inter-Regional routes.Great British Railways will begin to address the critical issues of fares once it gets under control. It has already tried with season tickets. The review must also look at capacity issues on the railway (for instance, CrossCountry was a no growth operation for many years due to passenger demand explosion), and balance out the cost of getting fares right. They are not doing the right thing if they want people to get off the train and into the car.Economy Class and Beyond is your no-nonsense guide for network news, honest reviews, and the humour, madness, and unique research that I only know how.Follow me @EconomyBeyond on Twitter for all the latest news!
