AP Photo/Chris SzagolaAccording to Fred Katz of The Athletic, the Washington Wizards interviewed Sam Cassell, an ex-NBA player who is currently assistant head coach for the Philadelphia 76ers.Brian Windhorst, ESPN's head coach, reported Friday on his podcast that Wes Unseld Jr., the assistant head coach for the Denver Nuggets, and Cassell were the two "leading candidates" to the Wizards' job. (h/t Marc Narducci from the Philadelphia Inquirer).Cassell was a member of the NBA between 1993 and 2008. He won two championships with Houston Rockets, one with the Boston Celtics. Over his 15-year NBA career, Cassell averaged 15.7 points per game and 6.0 assists. He was also awarded All-Star status in 2004 with the Minnesota Timberwolves.Since 2009, he has been an official assistant coach for the Wizards (2009-2014), Los Angeles Clippers(2014-2020), and Philadelphia 76ers (2021-2021).After Scott Brooks was terminated by the Wizards, they are now looking for a replacement.Washington finished the regular season at 34-38. They were the eighth seed and final seed in Eastern Conference playoffs. The Wizards lost to the 76ers in five of their first round games.
