We finally have our first glimpse at The Many Saints Of Newark, the long-awaited prequel of The Sopranos. This TV series continues to be culturally relevant in modern times despite several delays and a pandemic. It is often called the greatest show ever, while others refer to it as a sequel of The Many Saints Of Newark.AdvertisementFor those who have seen the trailer, the greenish tint that appears over faces that you don't recognize was probably quite jarring. These two minutes are packed with many goodies and old favourites. Let's get down to business and take a look at the trailer shot by shot (or as close as possible).Newark, New JerseyWelcome to Newark Screenshot: HBO MaxIt places us in The Sopranos' world with a chyron. A voice from the past speaks over the trailer. Tony Soprano, our old friend, leads us to the next shot. He says, "When I was a child, boys like me were taught follow codes." It sounds like James Gandolfini. It is not listed in any online transcripts. Perhaps one of our wonderful commenters can help. It could be an episode, an outtake or The Road To Respect videogame.0:05 Tony Soprano - OriginsAh, this is our first shot of Michael Gandolfini playing the role of Tony Soprano, his father. Carmella knows one thing for certain: it was his hair that won him over. That kid has a lot of hair. We are all subject to the ravages time. The real mystery is who is the kid calling him a jerk? Young Christopher Moltisanti is evident in the hair and facial features. The Sopranos Wiki says Christopher was born in 1972 so that we can exclude that possibility. This trailer is as close to the old-time Sopranos feel as it gets. Please, more humor. The famous jerk kid Screenshot: HBO MaxAdvertisement0:10 What would you say?Tony is pushing the jerk kid against a window that displays pork products. Nothing says Sopranos better than cured meat.AdvertisementThe shot also features a teen girl. She is blonde. Could it be Carmela (Edie Falco), a young Carmela? Tony knew her from high school. Artie Bucco (John Ventimiglia), whom he also met in high school, may be Artie getting the beating. This is the moment that made the future chef the sniveling coward that we all love. We will have more answers in the coming months.0:18 Tony, the lonerThese next shots show a few things. Tony is a loner who walks in New Jersey's snowy streets wearing a jacket made for lettermen. This is all because he played baseball and football in high school. The boy has so much potential, but Vera Farmiga, the perfect cast, knows that he isn't living up to his potential. The narrator also lets us know that the movie is actually about Antonio Soprano.AdvertisementVera Farmiga in Livia is Molto Buona Screenshot: HBO Max0:23 Gotta Serve SomebodyThis is when many people feel the trailer starts to bother them. The guitars pounding start a very nauseating cover of Bob Dylan's 1979 song Gotta Serve Somebody.AdvertisementAlthough Gotta Serve Somebody did appear in an episode before, HBO wanted to inform us that this is not your daddys Sopranos. This is the version by Mountain, who's hit Mississippi Queen may be of interest to you. This track is from their 2011 album Masters Of War. It's just a collection Dylan covers. No thanks.0:26 Parent-teacher conferenceWe are here. We've been waiting for it: A parent-teacher conference between Livia Andra Soprano & Mrs. Jarecki is a new character. Over the next few shots, Jarecki and Livias conversation continues. Jarecki reports that he has a high I.Q. based on the Stanford-Binet. Livia is wise beyond her years and knows that I.Q. Tests are bunk. She insists, saying, "You can't prove it by myself." Smart Livia.Advertisement0:31 LuncheonetteOkay, so we were in this luncheonette while Livia and Jareckis' conversation plays over the soundtrack. (Along with that horrible cover, which gilds the light on the whole Tony the American Bad Ass Soprano) Although this set does not look like Satriales Pork Store's inside, it may have had a counter service. Although we were familiar with the sidewalk service, backroom and meat grinder, we didn't get many shots inside the dining room. Season six features a few interior shots, especially when Tony meets FBI Agent Harris (Matt Servitto). We rarely see the deli counter and tables in these moments. This place is a true New Jersey institution. These greasy spots offer a great selection of pork rolls, eggs, cheese, with salt, ketchup, and cheese. Bada bing!AdvertisementBedroom 0:36 TonysTony's childhood bedroom, hell yeah! The interior of this house looks perfect north Jersey, with its split-level structure, railing and wooden door. It's a good moment to mention that these styles were common throughout the country. However, I was born in New Jersey so I interpret all of this through that lens. I'm sorry if this is annoying but here is the Sopranos trailer. The Clifford trailer, which features New Jersey, dropped today. Tony collapses between two speakers and listens to the Dylan cover. He's actually listening to Humble Pie. But, what's the matter? What is the difference between a sock or a Playboy? Tony, that's you. Jarecki says that he may not be able to apply himself but is intelligent. She should have known that he was wasting his potential with nudie magazines and rock n' roll.AdvertisementComputer: Enhance Screenshot - HBO MaxLivia doesn't have it at 0:42Jarecki says that the results show that he is a leader. Livia laughs. It is obvious that she only has negative things to say about her son. Tony once heard her say that daughters are better at caring for their mothers than sons.AdvertisementVera Farmiga deserves our gratitude. She laughs so beautifully. This is her performance to behold.David Chase 0:45David Chase told the world, just like George Lucas, that he would make art films after finishing The Sopranos. Not Fade Away, his one-time directorial effort, is not that different from Many Saints. It is a shame that he never did anything after the show.Advertisement0:48 Uncle DickOur second lead is Uncle Dick Moltisanti, Tony's father and mentor. He is first seen consuming a bottle of alcohol in a residential street. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America must have been knocking on doors to get him in the program. Dick is a well-known character in the show's mythology. He fucked up Tony and Christopher's lives. However, Nivola looks fantastic in the role.Advertisement0:51 Satriales Pork StoreFinally, some Sopranos material. We were back in Satriales. This is where Tony runs his crime group, DiMeo. It doesn't seem like much has changed between the film and the series. These tablecloths never go out fashion.AdvertisementThe back room at Satriales Screenshot: HBO Max0:55 The first whackingThis guy gets whipped in his car.1:01 You are my nephewOkay, we are forming some relationships. This trailer doesn't appeal to Sopranos fans. Viewers who have never seen the show are welcome. Moltisanti says, "You're my nephew." Tony called you Uncle Dick before. We are glad that we have made it right.Advertisement1:04 Crime itemsUncle Dick speaks about Tony's care and we are shown the best part of this trailer: A grimacing man who has a remarkable comb for counting money. The Sopranos can be a lot to many people. It's about men with bad hair who are trying to make money. We want to know more about this man, even though it is not clear who he is.AdvertisementWe can confirm this is John Magaros Silvio Daante after looking through some publicity photos. This also reveals something important: Silvio's hair was a full-length wig. Although it was not Little Stevens' hair, the character did wear a wig. This is a big revelation. This is the type of thing that will influence future rewatches (unless I was mistaken).Silvio, you have my hair! Screenshot: HBO MaxAdvertisement1:06 Ride in cars with TonyThis shot features an old favourite: Tony's gold necklace. Fans of the show will recognize this from any scene that shows Tony wearing a tank top or a robe. Chris Seay, author of The Gospel According to Tony Soprano says the necklace has a medallion from St. Jerome. This scholar is known for his translation of the Bible into Latin, and is the patron saint of libraries. Tony doesn't read much, but he does read Sun Tzus The Art Of War. Tony still frequently translates between his mob world, and his family's, so there is probably a term paper there.AdvertisementTony and his necklace Screenshot: HBO Max1:08 Back to crimeUncle Dick is lighting fires and kicking tires (well, almost exclusively the former). We see the famous origins of the speakers Tony was placed between earlier. These shots are setting up Tony's conflict. Join Dick or go to college. This trailer is full of serious prequel energy.Advertisement1:0 Pinkies availableThis is probably our first glimpse at Billy Magnussen's Paulie Walnuts. Tony Sirico's iconic look is so obvious that it would be hard to forget this moment. It would be, if not for the pinky and pinky rings. Let's say 90%. Magnussen is not the only thing that holds us back. Perhaps there are prosthetics for the nose.AdvertisementPaulie? Screenshot: HBO MaxDreams of 1:13 TonysTony says that he wants to go to college. I won't be caught with such shit.AdvertisementUncle Dick says, "Look, you take the speakers." You also think to yourself, "This is the last time I ever steal anything." Tony's bad decisions are a vicious cycle.1:27 Big Ol' BoatIs there something wrong with this movie? Is this a movie about getting more? Who is getting out of this boat?AdvertisementWe have some serious Bernthal action happening so there is nothing to be worried about. According to IMDB, Jon Bernthal's role is not yet listed. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that he is Tonys father, Johnny, considering that he is riding along with Cory Stolls Uncle Junior. We'll see.We are aware that Tony's father was far away. Perhaps that is why Tony listens only to Dickie. Bernthal, a Gary Cooper-esque strong and silent type, would be a great choice for Tony. He's not going to say much.AdvertisementScreenshot of The Soprano Brothers - HBO Max1:32 RiotThe next two shots show a recreation from the 1967 Newark Riots. This movie finally communicates when it took place.Advertisement1:36 Legends have never been bornThis tagline is very clever with Made being a key word in the Sopranosverse. This episode also features some mob violence, particularly the drill. (I wouldn't like to be on that side of that thing. Bob, no siree.AdvertisementScreenshot of the drill - HBO Max1:43 Mister SofteeMister Softee, a North East classic, is for the uninitiated. Mister Softee was founded in Philadelphia in mid-50s and is a great ice cream shop. It inspired a whole episode of Pete And Pete. It's great to see Tony and the jerkoff kid come together in time to stop this ice cream truck driver from getting hurt. Help local businesses.Advertisement1:45 Ray LiottaWhy didn't we know Ray Liotta was involved in this? He is Eckley DiMeo. Jackie Aprile could be a jerk. He is known as Hollywood Dick Moltisanti according to public photos. Although he didn't get many mentions on the show he is most likely Uncle Dicks father.AdvertisementThis results in more gangland stuff. This leads to Bernthal shooting, smoking, and Newark in flames. It is easier to make this trailer work if you separate each section. It is ruined by the Mountain song.Montage 1:53The montage continues. It's hard to say if there is anything worthwhile, but it seems like we are seeing Christopher Moltasanti in two of these photos, which is quite entertaining.Advertisement1:59 For nephewsHere's Tony Soprano leading a group teenagers on the road to destruction.AdvertisementThe montage will be continued in a second. This gives us a shot at Hobbys Delicatessen in Newark. According to their website, the Jewish deli was established in 1962. This shot also features the Adams Theatres marquee, which reads Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine and Charles Bronson. The play is set in summer 1967. The recreation of Newark is stunning.Newark on Fire Screenshot - HBO MaxAdvertisement2:07 Stay out his lifeRay Liotta's appearance in this scene suggests the movie's time jumps. It is clear that it took place in the 60s. However, this shot suggests that some of it may have taken place in the 70s.Advertisement2:02 A Sopranos StoryThe trailer finally plays the song that so many people were waiting for: Woke Up This morning by Alabama. This is a breather of fresh air, compared to the Mountain cover. The subtitle, "A Sopranos Story 2016," will soon make the party go down. Are there more? This is the beginning of a franchise. Don't be surprised if the subtitle fades in the months ahead. Let's hope so.AdvertisementOn October 1, The Many Saints of Newark will be in theaters
