Ukraine-Sweden provides more late Euro drama, as match-winner Dovbyk pops up as the unlikely hero

The Euro Tonight panel debates Marcus Danielson's right to be sent home in extra time following Sweden's 2-1 defeat to Ukraine. (1:17).Although it was impossible to match Monday's drama, the Round of 16 concluded with Ukraine and Sweden completing their dramatic end after an intense match. Artem Dovbyk, the new Ukrainian folk hero is now a legend. Dovbyks for generations will always remember that moment when he scored his first international goal. They might even look it up on YouTube.Dovbyk is a forward for SC Dnipro-1 aged 24. He made his international debut in March but is not what you would call a rising star. His illustrious career has taken him to the Ukrainian second division as well as the Danish league and the Moldovan League. He had only played 51 minutes of international soccer... against Kazakhstan, Bahrain, and the United States.Fixtures and bracketHowever, on Wednesday, he made a name for himself in Ukraine with his buzzer-beating dive header, which slipped between Filip Helander and Victor Lindelof, propelling Ukraine past Sweden 2-1 and into a quarterfinals match against England at Euro 2020. It was the culmination of a thrilling game in Glasgow. The celebration of his and the other visiting fans said it all. He pulled off his shirt, ran, eyes wide open, and fists pumping as he sprinted towards the bench. An unlikely hero, a huge moment for a nation and pure joy."I believe the guys played for their fans. We are very happy. Manager Andriy Schevchenko said that our diaspora supported us. "I believe some people would have spent their last money to get there -- we heard you and thank you so very much for your support."It was a hot, sunny day in Glasgow. As the teams began to play, it became clear that Ukraine had game-planned for the Swedes. After going 4-3-3 in group games, Andriy Shevchenko changed to a 3-man back line. This was done to counter the young Swedes' dynamos up front, Alexander Isak, and Dejan Kulusevski. However, it also allowed Oleksandr Zinchenko to do what Manchester City does down the theft flank: open wide with the option to drift inside or attack the by-line to cross.Zinchenko had been a central player in earlier games, and it made sense on some levels. Shevchenko was facing a difficult challenge. To get more ball, you can move Shevchenko into a more influential and central position. This is what Shevchenko did in previous games. Zinchenko also started his career there. However, the City man was poor. The line-up of Sweden looked familiar, which made it look lop-sided. Balance is another mid-major problem. It was a 4-4-2 nominally. Sebastian Larsson (36-year-old defensive midfielder) was the man to the right. We have Emil Forsberg, an attacking force, who is a dynamic, graceful and agile player who has played a lot of forward for Leipzig over the years. The game was similar to previous games but the approach was different. It became an open and engaging back-and forth. We saw the safety-first, minimalist defend-and-counter side in the first group games. It was not there. It was replaced by a side that shouted, "We got here, we're playing for house money, let’s go for it!" Similar mentality was adopted by Ukraine. Despite not including the highly-hyped Ruslan Manovskyi, Shevchenko's soldiers advanced with glee, expanding to play on both flanks, and letting Mykola Shaparenko, hyperactive, wreak havoc.Artem Dovbyk used to be a distant relative when he entered Tuesday, but this is no longer true thanks to his heroics for Ukraine. (Photo by ANDY BUCHANAN/POOL/AFP via Getty ImagesHe was the one who selected Andriy Yarmolenko using a precise crossfield ball that was just inside the box. Yarmolenko made a turn, feinted, and delivered a scooped shot with his boot's outside that looked almost like a trick shot on the billiard felt. The ball curved around the Swedish defenses and landed softly. Zinchenko, who was rushing to finish the game from the other side, then rushed it. Sweden Goalkeeper Robin Olsen tried to get a hold of it but was unsuccessful."After the three first games, we were criticized a lot. I wanted to tell them to be quiet because we are a team that is worthy of [praise] for our efforts to accomplish our tasks. Zinchenko said that he had shown them support us after the match.Sweden immediately sought to equalize and were awarded just before halftime when Forsberg's shot outside the box hit the large body of Ilya Zabarnyi (18 years old) and into the net. Is it being ignored? Yes. Are you deserving? Yes. Both can be true.As both Sweden and Ukraine tried to find their momentum, the second half saw the woodwork shaken three times. The first was Serhiy Sydorchuk. Next, Forsberg found the outside of the post. With just 20 minutes remaining, Forsberg, who has soft contours that remind you of an Ewok and the heart of Berserker, performed a devilish dance through the Ukraine ranks, uncorking a shot that crashed against the crossbar. As the extra time approached, you didn't want it to end.Ukraine fans, seated in a corner in Hampden Park for their heroes of yesteryear, elicited a standing ovation for Shevchenko. Deep in thought, he raised his hand to salute. He wished he could break down the Swedish ranks as he had done nine year ago against them when he scored two goals in a 2-1 victory over Ukraine at Euro 2012.Janne Andersson, Sweden's boss, made a triple substitution at five minutes of extra-time. He took out both Isaks and Kulusevski as well as Larsson. Although it was bold, Marcus Danielson's mistimed boot caught substitute Artem Besedin right above the knee. This left Besedin with a serious injury. Referee Daniele Orsato was forced to make a decision. Danielson was expelled."This victory, I'd like you to dedicate to Besedin. He received a terrible injury and when I returned to the locker room, it was beyond me. Zinchenko said that he was certain that he would come back stronger after his teammate's death.Sweden was determined to win and kept the ball in their hands. The moment Zinchenko's cross, Dovbyk’s header and the goal that would change the history of Ukrainian footballers for many more years was here.Shevchenko raised his arms high and hugged his former Milan teammate, Mauro Tassotti. This was exactly the kind of goal he used scoring. It wasn't the head, but it was the most important part. The timing of the run was more important. It gave two defenders the chance to slip but they were careful to keep on the sidelines and left no chance for the keeper.England is next, but Shevchenko won't back down from the challenge."To get a result like this we had to believe in ourselves and be strong. Today, our players proved it. "The English team is a great one, and they have a great substitutes bench," stated the ex-Chelsea striker."I saw the first half. They are strong, and I know this well. They have a great coach. We know how difficult this game is."Now, we only need to rest and we'll start our preparations tomorrow. We will do our best to achieve a positive outcome.Although Ukraine might have been outsiders to the tournament, Shevchenko's boys show promise.
