He defeated fellow finalists Philipp Grubauer from the Colorado Avalanche, and Andrei Vasilevskiy from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The three goaltenders were announced as finalists on June 1. This was just in time to begin the second round playoff series between Fleury & Grubauer. It was however the only person from the West Division, Vasilevskiy who had won a Vezina before. In 2018-19, the Lightning goaltender won the award. Fleury and Grubauer were keen to win what would have been their first Vezina.Given his resume which includes four All-Star selections and three Stanley Cup titles, it is not surprising Fleury has never been awarded one. This season, the 36-year old proved his worth with a 26-10-0 record and six shutouts. He also had a.928 save rate and an impressive 1.98 goals against average. In the final statistic, only Grubauer (1.95) and Alex Nedeljkovic (1.95) were better.Grubauer's goals-against-average was not the only thing that stood out. The Avalanche goal-stopper had a record of 30-9-1, seven shutouts (leading the league) and a.922 save rate.Vasilevskiy was the defending Stanley Cup champion and figured out how to beat his opponent on a nightly basis. He still managed to post a 31-10-1 record with 2.21 goals against average, five shutouts, and a.925 save rate. His best mark in a career that included a Vezina, a Stanley Cup title, and three All-Star selections was his goals-against-average.As they sought to add the coveted award, all three finalists did an outstanding job throughout 2020-21. However, Fleury won.
