WhatsApp's Spanish language content moderators push for equal pay in internal letter

According to an internal letter obtained from The Verge, WhatsApp's Spanish content moderators are pushing for equal pay. They claim they have been denied a $2 an hour premium that is paid to bilingual contractors. Accenture, a third party contracting company in Austin, Texas, employs the workers.Employees write that Accenture, Facebook and Whatsapp have for years denied Spanish-language Contingent Workers equal pay and treatment. Companies like Accenture and Facebook are insulted by their failure to provide equal treatment and pay to workers.Spanish-speaking workers are demanding that Spanish-language contractors be paid the $2 premium and backpay for money they haven't received since being hired.According to one worker, they were told that they would need to learn Arabic and Portuguese to get the premium. In an interview with The Verge, the employee said that they were already bilingual and that I would be able to accept it. The policy did not change.The letter was addressed to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, Will Cathcart CEO of WhatsApp, and Julie Sweet, CEO at Accenture. The letter was posted today to Workplace, Facebook's internal communications platform. It currently has 89 signatures, including those from Accenture, WhatsApp, Facebook employees.According to an internal letter, workers had fought for equal pay for many years. The note states that Accenture's Austin, Texas managers and HR representatives have not only ignored complaints of discrimination for many years, but also actively participated in making sure this injustice went unaddressed and unacknowledged. This blatant act discrimination and racism towards its essential workers must stop.Accentures Austin office asked Facebook content moderators to return to the office during the pandemic. Many expressed concern for their safety and felt that the company had not adequately addressed their concerns. These workers are among the lowest-paid on Facebook and earn an average of $18.50 per hour.Accentures Spanish-speaking customer service representatives claim they earn as low as $16.50 per hour. An employee told The Verge Accenture is like the Walmart of the tech sector. To survive, most of us need to have at least two jobs. We are paid $16.50 per hour. This is not a living wage in Austin.The Verge requested comment from Accenture and Facebook but they did not respond immediately.
