NFL Reportedly Won't Hold Supplemental Draft for 2nd-Straight Year

AP Photo/Jack DempseyAccording to Tom Pelissero, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the NFL will not hold a supplemental draft for 2021.Pelissero pointed out that the collective bargaining agreement gives the league the power to unilaterally decide on the supplemental draft.It was not held in 2020. Players who were eligible for the supplemental draft were informed at the time that they would have to join the 2021 draft, rather than being granted immediate free agency.A supplemental draft is an option for players who were not eligible for the actual draft but had their status changed after the event. The round they select the player, the more teams bid against each other and forfeit one draft pick.The Arizona Cardinals, for example, took Jalen Thompson, a Washington State safety in the fifth round. The 2020 NFL draft did not include a fifth-round selection.Teams still trying to tweak their rosters will not notice much from Tuesday's announcement. A general manager doesn't look for a potential star in the supplemental draft.Josh Gordon was the last Supplemental Draftee to make it to the Pro Bowl. His career has been hampered by several suspensions. Only one supplemental draftee, Chris Carter, has made it to the Hall of Fame.
