Serena Williams Withdraws From 1st-Round Match at 2021 Wimbledon Due to Injury

She slipped along the baseline, and her ankle became awkwardly bent. After a medical timeout, Williams tried to continue her game but was unable.As she left the locker room, the 23-time Grand Slam champion was still limping. The injury was too severe for her to recover from when she couldn’t lift her left leg while serving.Williams was in tears and trying to keep going, illustrating the pain she was feeling while trying to carry on. After Sasnovich had hit a groundstroke on her backhand side, Williams slumped down to the court. This removed any doubts about whether she was able to continue.The injury is enough to cause the end of the 39-year old's Wimbledon run. Anguish is only heightened by the possible consequences of the injury.Williams hasn’t won a Grand Slam title in Grand Slam since 2017, and she’s not getting any younger. She is closing in on Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slam record.
