House appropriators look to fund plaque honoring Jan. 6 responders

We are glad to see you. We are grateful for your service. Herrera Beutler expressed gratitude for the officers' service. After Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that a 13-member panel would be formed to investigate the insurrections and their causes, the move was made to honor the police officers who protected the Capitol. The GOP will select five of the panel members, but Pelosi is weighing whether she should choose one Republican to be one of her eight appointees.Donald Trump supporters have formed a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6 Riot. This follows a Senate Republican block of bipartisan legislation that would have created an independent commission with the exact same mission. After approbating the plaque, the Appropriations committee adopted the larger spending bill for legislative branch along party lines. The measure was sent to the House floor with a vote of 33-25. The bill provides $603.9 million to the Capitol Police. This is a 17 percent increase in funding for the current fiscal years. It aims at boosting training, diversity, and transparency.Federal cash will run out at the end the fiscal year, Sept. 30, so any funding agreement for government will require support from Senate Republicans. They have not yet released their annual spending bills. Congress is more likely than not to pass a continuing resolution that will keep the government open beyond Sept. 30, which gives more time for negotiations.
