Uniworld's Sao Gabriel makes debut in Portugal

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises christened the Sao Gabriel, its latest Super Ship, on June 28, officially launching the first post-pandemic sailings by Americans on Portugal’s Douro River.Uniworld's director for operations Joke DeBruyn, christened the Uniworld explorer with her godmother Joke. This was just one week after Uniworld had led the restarting of European river cruising for Americans through the sailing in Italy of La Venezia.Ellen Bettridge, Uniworld CEO, said that it was a joy to celebrate with our loyal guests and crew and toast being back on rivers aboard our brand-new Super Ship. "This is just the beginning. It has been a long journey. However, after recent sailing in Portugal and Italy, we are looking forward to continuing the momentum by resuming our itineraries in France next month.SimilarOthers lines will follow, with limited sailings starting July 1 in Portugal or France for Americans. As Europe slowly reopens, multi-country cruises on Danube or Rhine will be offered later in the summer.The Sao Gabriel replaces the Queen Isabel, an older Douro vessel.Uniworld will also launch the Sphinx, a new Super Ship on Nile in September.Uniworld is continuing its efforts to upgrade its fleet to Super Ships. These ships have more suites and offer expanded dining options.Uniworld will also launch the Mekong Jewel, a new vessel for Asia in this year's fleet.
