Bolivia arrests ex-official in probe of IMF loan agreement

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP), Bolivia's government has taken a former official from the Treasury Ministry into custody in connection with an investigation into a loan that was rescinded by President Lus Arce.According to Manuel Saavedra, the former Vice Minister Carlos Schlink was detained Tuesday while he tried to leave the country. Three former ministers of the Treasury are also under investigation.Jeanine ez was the former interim President. Schlink was detained on sedition charges. After President Evo Morales was forced to resign amid protests, the conservative took over as president in 2018. He resigned after Morales' leftist party won election last year.The IMF agreed to loan $327 million to ez for the COVID-19 crisis. However, Arce denounced the deal, and returned the money. He claimed that it placed financial conditions on the country. The IMF sent a letter to Bolivia's congress deniging any such conditions.Audalia Zurita Schlink's lawyer stated that her client didn't sign loans.Last month, Justice Minister Ivn Peruma claimed that financial loss was caused by the need to repay the loan.Opposition leaders have accused the government with judicial 'persecution after the arrest of about 20 former officials. Similar accusations were levelled against her government when it attempted to prosecute Morales, along with several of his key aides.
