CNN Drops 68% In Prime As Fox News Channel Crushes Competition In 2Q Cable News Ratings

According to Nielsen ratings data, MSNBC was second with 1.56 million viewers and CNN third with 914,000 viewers. Fox was first in the key demo with 347,000 viewers. CNN had 224,000 viewers and MSNBC had 198,000 viewers.Fox News' quarterly ratings delivery was the second consecutive quarter as the top-rated cable news network, not only in cable news but also in all of basic cable. It posted its 78th consecutive quarterly win among cable news networks among total viewers and it sixth consecutive quarterly victory in the key demo.All cable news networks saw ratings drops compared to the second half of 2020. CNN had the largest year-over-year drop of prime time viewers, dropping 57%. Fox News saw a 42% decline, while MSNBC saw a 37% drop in total prime viewers.The year-over-year drops in prime time from key demo were more severe than expected. CNN lost 68% in the second quarter 2020, a shocking drop of 68%. Fox News suffered a 50% decline in traffic compared to a year ago. MSNBC's drop was slightly lower at 48%.The second quarter of MSNBC was the 47th consecutive quarter for the network, finishing ahead CNNamong total viewers and viewers 25-54.
