Google and Unity have teamed up to allow developers to access the Unity game engine for a better mobile gaming experience on Chrome OS devices. Unity's Android Dev environment will allow developers to create or port Android games for Chrome OS devices starting with 2021.2 beta. Unity 2021.1 will add Chrome OS support later this year. Unity games were only compatible with the Chrome OS runtime until now.Unity believes Chrome OS is "an interesting opportunity" to Android developers, as Chromebooks continue their rise in popularity. With shipments exceeding 30 million units, Chromebook sales increased by more than 100% year-overyear in 2020.Unity will support Chrome OS devices with x86_64 resolutions. Unity had previously deprecated Android x86 support back in March 2019, due to "minimal adoption." Unity's Input System allows developers to program their input controls on Chromebooks to deliver a better gaming experience. Unity's Input System supports keyboard and mouse input and allows developers to create touchpads and right-click actions.Unity supports multi-window support for Chrome OS devices, including Freeform windows and full-screen mode. Unity's performance optimizations and profiling can be used by developers to give Chromebook users a smooth gaming experience regardless of their device's limitations.
