Instagram has had a strict policy regarding who can post links to their stories. But, Instagram is now launching a new test that may expand that capability. It is not a swipe-up link that users will be allowed to post, but a linking sticker. These stickers will work in the same way as a swipe-up link, but with a tap rather than a swipe. People will be able respond to stories with stickers, unlike stories that require swipe-ups.The test is currently very limited. Vishal Shah (Insta's head of product), tells The Verge that it is mostly about learning how people might use links. They will be looking for links and avoiding spam. Stickers, he said, are more compatible with the current platform's use. Therefore, this test integrates links into the same system. This makes sense from a system perspective. He says that link stickers will be the ultimate goal of Instagram, regardless of whether it is for all users or only those with linking privileges. He says that this is the future system he would like to see. If we are able to make it work, that is what we plan to create. For now, links will only be available for stories. Shah said that there is no plan to add them to the feed or to any other section of the app. This test is primarily targeted at people who have found a voice on Instagram, but not to the same level that Instagram requires to get swipe-up privileges. Users must be verified or have at most 10,000 followers. For example, activists have been skilled in calling people to action but not being able to direct them to websites. This could make it possible. It is a very small test and the platform will not change rapidly overnight. However, it could be the beginning of people web surfing from the Instagram app more often.
