Red Cross warns Indonesia faces coronavirus catastrophe

Jakarta, Indonesia (AP). Indonesia must urgently improve medical care, testing, and vaccinations because the number of new infections has increased rapidly and put it at the brink of a COVID-19 disaster, Red Cross stated Tuesday.According to the group, Bogor's coronavirus hospital, located outside of Jakarta was full and emergency tents were set up to accommodate more patients. Similar scenes were seen at other hospitals in the area, including at the Bekasi hospital which had 90% of its beds full."We are seeing a record number of infections but every statistic is someone who is suffering, grieving, or struggling to support their loved ones," Sudirman Said, secretary general of the Indonesian Red Cross, stated in a statement. Our medical teams provide lifesaving care with hospitals full to capacity and oxygen supplies at critical levels.The virus delta variant, which was first identified in India, is believed to be responsible for the surge in Indonesia's population, making it the fourth-largest country in the world. More than 20600 cases were reported in Indonesia on Monday, with more than 400 deaths.More than 2.1 Million cases in Indonesia have been reported since the pandemic started. There have also been more than 57,000 deaths, the highest number in Southeast Asia.In a nation of 270 millions people, less than 5% have been fully vaccinated.
