Uttar Pradesh police books Twitter India chief Manish Maheshwari in distorted map row

Uttar Pradesh police quickly acted and filed an FIR against Twitter India's Managing Director Manish Mahashwari for the wrong map of India.Maheshwari was booked along with others under Section 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code. This was based on a complaint from a Bajrang Dal leader, Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh.Tweep Life, Twitter's career site, had displayed the Union Territories Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, outside India, on its website. A Twitter user flagged the map as distorted and demanded action. The map is now corrected.Maheshwari also faces notices from the UP police in relation to earlier notices. On June 17, Maheshwari was served notice by the Ghaziabad Police regarding a complaint relating to tweets about the beating of an elderly Muslim man in Loni district. The micro-blogging site showed Leh as part Jammu and Kashmir in November 2020 instead of the Union Territory Ladakh. Twitter had been sent a legal notice by the Central government for violating India's territorial integrity.This latest incident is part of the ongoing dispute between Twitter and the Government of India over the new IT Rules. The Centre has criticised Twitter's deliberate defiance of and inability to conform with new IT rules. Social media companies are required to create grievance redressal mechanisms for victims and users under the new rules, which went into effect May 25.
