Venezuelan couple gave a lasting gift to the Jewish community before they died in collapse

Leon Oliwkowicz and Christina Beatriz Elvira were among the 10 victims identified following the Surfside condo building collapse.According to Miami-Dade police, Oliwkowicz was 80 and Elvira was 74. According to Miami-Dade property records, the couple lived in apartment 704 at Champlain Towers South.Four children and eleven grandchildren survived them.According to Chabadinfo.com, although they are from Venezuela, and moved to Surfside recently, they were close to Chicago's Lubavitch community where their daughter Leah Fouhal lives.They were active and generous members in the Jewish community of Chicago.According to The Chicago Jewish Home, the couple donated a Sefer Torah in 2019 to Yeshivas Ohr Eliyahu Lubavitch Mesivta in Chicago, where their daughter is employed.Fouhals' home was the starting point for a parade that included music, a firetruck and a giant velvet-and-gold crown to celebrate the new scroll.Oliwkowicz stated in Yiddish during the ceremony that it was an honor and opportunity to donate the Torah to the parents in their memory.Brian Fincheltub was the director of Consular Affairs at the Venezuelan Embassy. He tweeted about the death the Oliwkowicz couples.He wrote in Spanish that nobody can prepare us for such tragedy and terrible news.
