Man faces 20 years in prison after jumping from plane in LA

LOS ANGELES (AP), Authorities Monday revealed that a passenger who attempted to enter an airplane cockpit last week was recently under the influence methamphetamine. He then jumped from a moving plane in Los Angeles.According to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Los Angeles, Luis Antonio Victoria Dominguez, a Mexican citizen, broke his leg when he opened the emergency exit of the plane and jumped onto the Los Angeles International Airport tarmac.He had surgery and will appear before federal court this week to face a charge of interference in flight crew. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 20 years imprisonment.It wasn't immediately clear if he was represented by an attorney.Monday's criminal complaint provided new details on the incident and Victoria Dominguez’s life in the days preceding.According to the complaint, the 33-year old arrived in Los Angeles Tuesday night from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He had planned to fly to Salt Lake City but did not have a connecting flight. After consuming several beers and purchasing a lot crystal meth for $20, he spent the night in a Los Angeles hotel.According to the complaint, he continued to use crystal meth the next day and decided to fly to Utah rather than take a bus. Before heading to the airport on Thursday, he smoked more of this drug and then wandered through the streets throughout the night.He missed a second flight on Friday but was rescheduled for United Airlines Flight 5365 operated by SkyWest Airlines to Salt Lake City. Victoria Dominguez sat down and fell asleep, as if he was taking a nap from the effects of the drugs he'd taken over the past few days," the complaint states.According to authorities, the passenger who was next to Victoria Dominguez said that he looked around and kept fidgeting. He then asked Victoria Dominguez where she was going. She said that it wasn't her business. He whispered to her then that he wanted to get off the plane, and was going to jump out. He said, "I'm serious."Continue the storyHowever, Victoria Dominguez told the FBI that he was joking with other passengers and said they were going to another destination. He panicked. Around 7:15 p.m., he ran towards a flight attendant and stated that he was not feeling well and had to get off the plane.According to the complaint, the flight attendant stated that the plane was about ready to take off when they started to struggle. According to the complaint, he tried to open the cockpit door by banging on it. The flight attendant also prayed that the pilots would not be confused by the banging.According to the complaint Victoria Dominguez opened the emergency exit door, and the emergency slide was deployed. The flight attendant then called the pilots to call them to stop the plane.According to the FBI, he said that his panic attack could have given him the strength to open and close the door. Victoria Dominguez was struggling with a passenger trying to hold him back.Victoria Dominguez escaped and jumped out of the plane, missing the emergency slide, landing on the asphalt, and breaking his right leg. When he was arrested, he was trying to get away from the aircraft.
