The temperature in Seattle has topped 100 degrees for the third consecutive day. This is a break from the previous record of 104 set on Sunday. Portland, Oregon's temperature reached 113 degrees Monday. This was the third consecutive day that the city has set an all-time high. Salem, Oregon, the capital of Oregon, reached 117 degrees Monday afternoon. This was a new record and just two degrees short of the record for Oregon's hottest temperature, which was set in 1898. The National Weather Service attributes the warm east wind blowing in from all night to the fact that a recording station at 1,150 feet in Larch Mountain, eastern Clark County, Washington did not fall below 94 degrees on Sunday night.Surprising FactThe temperatures rose so high that many reports were made about roads in Seattle and Portland buckling from the heat.Important BackgroundThe Pacific Northwest enjoys one of the most temperate summer climates in America. Highs in major cities are in the 70s on typical June days. A high pressure system called a heat dome has accumulated over the region and brought scorching temperatures, similar to another heat dome which brought record-breaking heat earlier in the month to the southwest U.S. The weather should improve in the coastal areas over the next few days. However, the heat will not abate in the interior for the foreseeable future. Spokane, Washington will reach an all-time high of 112 Tuesday. Highs will remain above 100 through the next week. Boise, Idaho is also not expected to see a daily low of 100 degrees for at most a week.TangentCanada's new record-setting high was set in Lytton (British Columbia) on Sunday.
