After injuring himself in a collision with Ernie Clement, right fielder for the Indians Josh Naylor was taken off the field. (0:24).MINNEAPOLIS -- Target Field was watching right fielder Josh Naylor and Ernie Clement go on a collision course in pursuit of a popup. Everyone at Target Field waited for someone to veer off.They didn't.The Cleveland Indians defenders collided with each other in a frightening moment Sunday that left Naylor with serious injuries and both dugouts shaking.Terry Francona, Indians manager, said that Naylor had broken a bone after the 8-2 loss against the Minnesota Twins. He wasn't certain which one but was being treated in a hospital."That's clearly playing out before anyone's eyes," Twins manager Rocco Balidelli stated. "You cannot, you know, once it is seen, you won't be able to unsee that, and it brings up feelings, too. It's difficult for people, regardless of their team affiliation, to refocus and there are many people who care about that young boy, and we'll continue to think about him as the time goes by."Jorge Polanco made contact with the ball and checked his swing in the fourth inning. A flare was sent into the shallow outfield.After the collision, Naylor flew and spun and his right foot caught underneath him. This caused Naylor to twist the foot in the wrong direction.Naylor was writhing on to the ground in pain and teammates immediately called for medical attention. His right foot was air cast and he was carried off the field.Francona stated, "It's difficult." Francona said, "You could see the way he responded. It is hard not to react to that. Everyone is thinking about him. Ernie was a very good-looking man.Clement saw the ball glance off his glove and scored a single.Rene Rivera, Indians catcher, said, "To be truthful, it was really, really difficult." It was heartbreaking to see how he reacted. It's difficult. He was a nice guy, a positive guy in the clubhouse and it was very difficult to watch him struggle through this. The teammate can clearly see that the whole dugout was shaken.Francona said: "On replay, Naylor was going to catch the ball right at shoulder height. He has to call it. He's the second baseman and he keeps going until he hears. There has to be communication, but I don't believe that there is.Clement was playing in his seventh majors game.Francona stated that Francona could have been the one on the receiving end of the attack, but he escaped with a minor cut to his chin. Francona said that he felt horrible and that it wasn't his fault. He is a wonderful kid.This season has been hard for Cleveland, with injuries to pitchers Shane Bieber and Aaron Civale among those who have missed the action.After a 12-minute delay, play resumed.
