'A tough slog': White House struggles to increase vaccination rates as Delta variant surges

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 46 percent of Americans are vaccinated. The number of vaccines given per day has dropped by nearly 300,000.This stagnant vaccination rate is a sign that the White House is having a hard time convincing Americans to get Covid-19 shots, while the rest of the world struggles with securing a steady supply. It raises questions about the federal government's ability to manage the increasing number of Covid-19 cases related to the Delta variant over the coming months, while schools and businesses return to their normal operations. This is the door to door campaign. This is the church-to–church campaign. It is about going into the community and getting to know people. Scott Becker, CEO of Association of Public Health Laboratories, stated that we are not going to convince everyone. The Delta variant's explosive growth and I wish there were a better way for me to describe the damage it is doing to those communities. But it will be hard work.In states like Oklahoma and Missouri, where there is not enough vaccination, new Covid-19 infections have increased more than 50% in the past two weeks. Many cases can be attributed to the Delta variant of Covid-19, which is responsible for about one-fifth nationwide of all new infections.According to the current data, the Delta strain is more transmissible that the Alpha strain, which has been dominant in the U.S. this Spring, stated Summer Galloway, a senior advisor at the agency. She said that preliminary data from the U.K. indicates that people who are not vaccinated against the Delta variant of the disease have a higher risk of being hospitalized. The CDC is currently investigating whether the variant causes more severe infections in undervaccinated populations. The good news is that the Pfizer vaccine against Delta is almost 90 percent effective, according to recent data. This makes vaccination the best way to stop variants from marching across the U.S.We want everyone to be vaccinated. Galloway stated that if there is a large percentage of the population who has not been vaccinated, you will see an increase in cases, hospitalizations and deaths. This could cause another surge.A spokesperson for the CDC said that the CDC encourages people not vaccinated to use masks and avoid indoor gatherings.According to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey, 13 percent of Americans say they won't get the Covid-19 vaccine. Twelve percent are still waiting to make a decision on whether they will be vaccinated. Seven percent will opt for it if necessary for work or for other reasons. In March, the Biden administration launched a $1B advertising campaign. It relied on television and radio spots to educate Americans about the benefits of vaccination as well as where and when they can get the shot. To reach high levels of hesitancy and opposition to vaccines, the administration collaborated with 275 organizations, including Nascar and the Christian Broadcasting Network. The federal government also joined forces with the Ad Council, a non-profit organization that partners with the federal governments on public service announcements, and the Covid Collaborative (a group of organisations working together to fight the virus) on ads promoting Covid-19 vaccinations. The CDC Vaccine Task Force offers vaccine confidence consultations to all interested jurisdictions. These consultations provide briefings between CDC officials, local leaders, and information about how states can build trust within their communities regarding vaccination.Three senior Biden health officials stated that the administration is pushing for more responsibility in convincing unvaccinated people to get the jab. Local officials can then tap trusted community leaders to spread word. It is hoped that local leaders will be better messengers than top federal officials or national ad campaigns.Officials from HHS, the CDC and the White House Covid-19 Task Force devised a plan to collaborate with local officials, including mayors. They will knock on doors in low-vaccination areas to encourage people to sign up for the shot. Chief medical advisor Anthony Fauci (President Joe Biden) and Rochelle Walensky, CDC Director, are making more appearances on national television and in local media in the South, where the Delta variant of the disease is spreading.Fauci has, for example, visited the vaccine sites in New York City and Florida with First Lady Jill Biden. Fauci spent Juneteenth going door to door with Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, encouraging city residents to get immunized.Jill Biden (first lady), and Dr. Anthony Fauci (director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) meet with a person during a visit to the Abyssinian Church in Harlem, New York, Sunday, June 6, 2021. Craig Ruttle/AP PhoyoThe Biden team isn't sure how many people would be attracted to these local appeals. The White House plans to prepare for the inevitable Covid-19 spikes in low-vaccination states later this summer and early next year. Many states have tried to encourage Covid-19 shots through lottery and other financial incentives. However, this strategy has been largely unsuccessful and Delta Covid-19 cases are on the rise. The CDC is currently examining whether to update its guidelines for schools as well as for international and domestic travel. Both federal and state health officials are weighing whether or not to recommend proof that vaccinations have been given for everything, from restaurants to movie theatres to offices. Fauci told POLITICO recently that the fear is that people who have not been vaccinated might protest. Although federal health officials have stated that vaccine passports would not be implemented at the nation level, certain states and private companies have considered using vaccine passes to help with safe reopening.According to an American official who has direct knowledge of the matter, officials from the European Union have been pressuring U.S. diplomats abroad to allow travel to the U.S. if they can prove that they are vaccinated. Germany issued a recent order allowing all U.S. citizens to fly into the country provided they can show proof of vaccination or have passed a negative Covid-19 screening.Officials from the Biden administration say that while there is concern about the rising number of Delta cases, it should not be overwhelming. Pfizer's vaccine is widely used in the U.S. to combat the variant. Modernas vaccine uses a similar technology so it is possible that it will also be effective in fighting Delta. The CDC is currently conducting studies to determine how effective the vaccines are against Delta, and the impact they have on children and the unvaccinated. We must be vigilant. We are seeing that this strain is affecting the amount of protection people get from their first dose of Covid-19. Phil Febbo is chief medical officer at Illumina DNA sequencing company. He said that he doesn't believe we are far from a new variant that is more dangerous than the Delta and reduces the effectiveness of both doses.
