General Secretary of the Congress party Priyanka Gandhi and Bahujan Samaj Party Chief Mayawati attacked the Uttar Pradesh government on October 16 over its decision to sack 25,000 home guards.

The home guards were reportedly relieved of their duties just before Diwali because of a budgetary crunch. However, Chetan Chauhan, the State Minister for Sainik Welfare, has assured that no home guard will be rendered jobless as all of the sacked persons would be absorbed in other government departments.

Priyanka posted a tweet rebuking the decision of the Yogi Adityanath-led Bharatiya Janata Party government to drown the festive spirit of thousands of security personnel.

She wrote on Twitter wall October 16: "The BJP government has decided to fire 25,000 home guards just ahead of Diwali. The law and order situation in the state has gone from bad to worse. At this time, when more security hands are needed, don't know what is on the mind of BJP government which is taking such decisions."

The Uttar Pradesh government has been attacked by Priyanka Gandhi several times in the past too concerning myriad issues including law and order situation.

Meanwhile, criticising the saffron party for its decision to downsize ahead of festivities, Mayawati tweeted: "Why should 25,000 Home Guards and their families suffer due to the faulty financial policies of the BJP government? This will only bolster lawlessness in the state. Why is the government increasing unemployment, instead of creating jobs? It is time the government focuses more on public welfare policies."

Chauhan, however, has clarified that it is likely that the number of days of the duty of the security personnel would be reduced to 15 or 20, but no one will be sacked as such. I have discussed it with the police department myself; everybody would be absorbed in other departments."

Notably, the home guards have protested against the government's decision with a "begging" protest in Azamgarh and some other areas of Uttar Pradesh.

The decision to terminate the service of 25,000 home guards was reportedly taken on August 28 at a meeting that was headed by UP Chief Secretary Anup Chandra Pandey.

These are the 25,000 Home Guards who were deployed by the State Home Department about a year ago to fill the vacancies in the police force. Also, in Uttar Pradesh, Home Guards are mainly deployed to manage traffic, therefore it is highly unlikely that their absence would heighten anarchy in the state. Are you happy with your current monthly income?
