President Donald Trump responded Tuesday morning to former first lady Michelle Obama's forceful rebuke of his character and leadership, claiming that he would not even have been elected to the White House were it not for what he said are failings of her husband's administration.

"Somebody please explain to @MichelleObama that Donald J. Trump would not be here, in the beautiful White House, if it weren't for the job done by your husband, Barack Obama," Trump wrote on Twitter. "Biden was merely an afterthought, a good reason for that very late & unenthusiastic endorsement."

The president's social media post came hours after the former first lady addressed the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, using her pre-recorded keynote speech to cast Trump as a commander in chief dangerously deficient in empathy and experience.
