We're less than three months away from what would have been our big trip to Japan. I've mentally prepared myself for months that this trip was never going to happen in 2020. Tonight, I took one big step to unwinding the plans for the trip. I canceled a hotel reservation for a property I've wanted to stay at for years, The Hyatt Regency Hakone Resort and Spa.
If we had to pay cash, this reservation would have taken over the top spot for the most we'd ever paid for a hotel room as it would have cost 64,200 JPY ($600) a night.
Using 25,000 Hyatt points a night for the room would get me a value of 2.4 cents a point.
I had plenty of Hyatt points in my account because I just received the sign-up bonus from the World of Hyatt card. I was so happy when I finalized the reservation.
It was time to cancel the reservation and undo what I was so happy to do. I logged into my Hyatt account and it only took a few clicks.
Accepting the terms and clicking cancel was all it took. My Hyatt account balance instantly went up by 50,000 points. I really wish it hadn't. I wish there wasn't COVID-19. I wish we could travel around the world again. But that's not where we are right now.
I'm hoping that in 2021 we'll want to travel to Japan and they'll want to have us. I'm keeping those points in my Hyatt account, so when I get to make a reservation at this hotel again, it will feel even better than the first time. At least that's what I'm telling myself right now.
