Munich (MUC) Airport Now Provides Coronavirus Tests Free Of Charge For Travel Returnees, 190 Euro Fee For Departing Pax

As Bavaria is once again mulling stricter Covid-19 measures passengers returning to Munich Airport can now receive a Coronavirus test for free.

Passengers who want to utilize this test upon arrival option don't have have to register with the the airport's emergency department, just provide the arrival boarding pass in order to be eligible for the free service.

Munich Airport continues to also offer tests for departing passengers, however in order for these tests to be administered one has to make an appointment.

From now on, the test for a possible infection with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is free of charge for travel returnees. The Corona Test Center is located at the Forum of Munich Airport Center on Level 03. Prior registration is not required.

Departing passengers at Munich Airport have the opportunity to be tested for possible infection with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Medicare, a subsidiary of Flughafen München GmbH, offers such tests for a fee (190 euros, plus weekend and night surcharges where applicable) at the airport's medical center (Terminal 1, Modul E, Level 03).

The PCR test is performed as a throat swab. The results (Health certificate) are sent by email in German and English. A positive test result will be reported to the public health department.

Anyone interested in such a test must register for it by calling the airport's emergency department on +49 89 975 633 99 or by sending an e-mail to notfallambulanz@munich-airport.de. The test results are available four hours after the swabs have been taken (there may be longer waiting times due to the high demand). Please note that you cannot call this number to request test results - neither for the free tests for travel returnees nor for the paid tests for departing passengers.

Attention: Tests are performed only on persons without Covid-19 symptoms, or without contact with a person who may have contracted Covid-19.

There have been discussions in Germany to tighten measures to fight Coronavirus again after certain parts of the country have seen a regional uptick in Covid cases. Bavaria was on the forefront of speculating about new rules this week.

Regular testing for departing passengers will come at a steep price of 190 Euro plus any possible surcharges which I consider rather extreme.

In comparison earlier this month I wrote about the testing option being available at Frankfurt Airport starting at 59 Euro plus 9 Euro for a certificate.

The testing at Munich Airport (at the Forum of Munich Airport Center on Level 03) is in the public area and as of this moment there isn't a requirement to provide negative test results in order to be able to enter Germany. Passengers have to clear immigration (conditions vary) and then make their way to the test site.

Germany as well as other EU countries have compiled a list of risk destinations which means passengers from there aren't allowed to fly over at all or in case they are eligible to enter based on citizenship or residence status have to go into 14 day isolation or get checked for Covid-19.

It's definitely easier to get this all done at the airport upon arrival if so desired than to run to regular hospitals or general practitioners. Also one should be aware that any positive test will be communicated to the office for public health.
