Lewis's casket arrived in the Capitol on Monday, following a journey through his home state of Alabama, including to the site of "Bloody Sunday," where he was beaten by Alabama state troopers during a march in 1965.

On Sunday, Lewis made one last trip over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, where he and other civil rights marchers were beaten by police in an event seen as one of the turning points of the movement, since it was televised.

Lewis went on to a lengthy career in politics, spending over 30 years in the U.S. House of Representatives for his Atlanta-based district.

He would remain in the House until his death on July 17, from pancreatic cancer.

After the Rotunda ceremony, there will be a public viewing for Lewis outside the U.S. Capitol that will continue through Tuesday; a private funeral will be held Thursday at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, which was once led by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
