Las Vegas Masks Required

From the moment the Las Vegas Strip reopened to the public I was shocked at how few people were wearing masks. I filmed video of the Caesars Palace casino floor opening night and noticed almost no one in masks. My subsequent visits to Circus Circus for a casino tour and elsewhere have been very similar.

One thing has been very noticeable to me among my visits to casinos, grocery stores and elsewhere. People don't wear masks. Or I should say the vast majority of the time less than 50% of the people are wearing masks. It's something I don't completely understand, but I am in no way trying to get political. I personally wear a mask when in a public space and don't participate in any form of mask shaming.

Masks Now Required in Nevada

But now things are changing. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak will sign an executive order that will require masks to be worn in all public areas in Nevada. That includes the casinos of the famous Las Vegas Strip.

I encourage all businesses to prominently post signage to alert customers and help ensure this directive is followed. I know there are some businesses who have already required face coverings for customers and I thank you for this strong and helpful stance. pic.twitter.com/5AqBJllYvr

According to the Reno Gazette Journal, "The directive goes into effect Thursday at 11:59 p.m. Nevadans and its visitors don't need to wear medical-grade N95 masks, Sisolak said. Fabric coverings like a bandana or cloth covering is good enough." Sisolak has carved out some exemptions including those with medical conditions and disabilities which prevent the use of a mask. Children between the ages of 2 and 9 will also be exempt.

"Businesses that fail to meet requirements in this directive will face violations from licensing agencies and regulatory authorities, in addition to Nevada OSHA. A reminder as well that businesses have the right to ask a patron to leave if they are not following this directive," Sisolak said. Detailed information about the new rules can be found here.

My fellow Nevadans: I'm offering us all another opportunity to limit our risk for exposure and infection, and to keep our businesses open and our economy moving. For Nevada to stay safe and stay open, we must make face coverings a routine part of our daily life.

Las Vegas Masks Required - Bottom Line

Going forward it will be required to wear a mask in Las Vegas Strip casinos and elsewhere in Nevada when you are in public. This levels out the playing field for people who prefer masks be worn, but it will no doubt be a controversial move and one that will be wildly unpopular with part of the population.

Are you less likely to visit Las Vegas because of the new mask requirement?
