On June 4, Las Vegas reopened with lots of cheers, as well as lots of new rules that reflect the age of coronavirus.

Upon reopening, all casino employees were required to wear face masks. Use of facial coverings for patrons was recommended, but optional.

So Las Vegas reopened and although it was recommended that patrons wore masks, few did.

Two weeks later, Vegas was reporting significantly increased coronavirus cases.

So on June 17, The Nevada Gaming Control Board updated its policy to include the following:

    t
  • Casinos are now required to ensure employees wear "appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)" and that they "provide training on how to properly use and dispose of all PPE."
  • t
  • Besides recommending facial coverings, face masks or cloth face coverings must be available for patrons and guests. Guests must be offered a face covering upon entering the property "or have signage throughout the establishment notifying patrons that face coverings are available."
  • t
  • Casinos must require patrons to wear face coverings at table and card games if there is no barrier, partition, or shield between the dealer and each player. This requirement applies to table and card game players, spectators, and any other person within 6 feet of any table or card game.

The new rules have the stated purpose of, "mitigating the spread of COVID-19 between people who are in close contact with each other for at least 15 minutes."

There were a lot of casino employees in Las Vegas who were genuinely afraid to go back to work when the casinos reopened. "Recommended" mask use for patrons meant that those who were positive for the virus could pass it on to workers if they (the patrons) chose not to wear facial coverings, and employees were understandably scared. At least this way table and card dealers, who have no choice but to be close to guests for extended periods of time, are more protected.
