Just announced: the U.S. has issued a ban on Brazilians entering the U.S. Additionally, anyone who has been in Brazil in the past 14 days is banned from entering the U.S. Flights from Brazil to the U.S. are prohibited. Here's what you need to know.
Just this week, Brazil just moved into 2nd place for the worst COVID-19 outbreak. It has now passed Spain, Italy & China for cases of COVID-19. The U.S. remains in first by a long shot. In announcing the ban, President Trump said:
"I don't want those people coming here and infecting our people. And also I don't want those sick people there. We are helping Brazil with ventilators.... Brazil is encountering problems, there's no doubt about that."There's no definition on how many ventilators will be donated or when they will be donated.
The U.S. is a major destination for Brazilians every year, with visiting Disney in Orlando and visiting New York City being almost a 'rite of passage' for most Brazilians entering adulthood. Given new laws in Brazil about canceled events and flights, it could take up to a year for people to receive refunds on canceled tours and flights from Brazil.
The U.S. continues to ban visitors from places it sees as having many COVID-19 cases. It started with China, then Europe, now Brazil. While the U.S. continues to have far & away the most cases, spreading domestically, this approach is geared toward limiting the introduction of foreign-derived cases. US citizens, permanent residents, and spouses of US citizens are exempt from the travel ban. How they would get to the U.S. without direct flights is a difficult logistical question, obviously. This makes me glad we don't have any trips planned up to the U.S. within the next 6 months.
