René wrote last week about a disappointing and rather shady move committed by DO$H.
The portal ran a Staples.com promotion awarding DO$H members 5% cashback on purchases. The offer originally didn't prohibit gift card sales. In fact, gift card purchases triggered the cashback reward.
But then DO$H not reneged - and clawed back pending cashback rewards triggered by Staples.com gift card purchases.
Online gift card purchases usually don't earn cashback. That's why the Staples.com promotion and Zola Amex Offer seemed great. Until the rug was pulled out from underneath us.
DO$H and Staples.com should have honored purchases made under the terms' original wording. DO$H is now certainly last on my list of portals to use.
Ren´e delinked his cards with DO$H and uninstalled the app. But I'm not following suit - at least, not yet.
Here's why.
DO$H awards cashback on thousands of dining purchases across the country. It's entirely possible to earn cashback without even intending to. For example, you're craving a Wendy's burger and Frosty. You swing through the drive-thru, pay with your linked card, and, hey - you earn cashback from DO$H!
So I'm fine with DO$H giving me money on "passive" spend. In other words, I won't necessarily make an effort to use DO$H. But if something triggers them giving me money, I'll gladly take it.
I've found Rakuten's and DO$H's dining programs usually stack.
Check out this cashback double-score I earned during a business dinner:
Over $7 back (plus 3X on my Chase Sapphire Reserve, making each point worth 1.5 cents in travel booked through Chase) is certainly nice. And I earned some Caesars Rewards points through their dining program, too.
Do save your receipts, though. You occasionally need to submit them to the portals if purchases don't track.
DO$H certainly didn't do themselves any favors with the Staples.com snafu. They should have honored their word.
I much prefer Rakuten, TopCashback, and BeFrugal to DO$H.
Frankly, my heart wouldn't break if DO$H goes away.
But when they give away money for purchases I'd normally make - especially when I can stack with Rakuten and other dining rewards programs - that's fine with me.
It's the least they can do.
