China will temporarily close its border to most foreign travelers, effective at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, to prevent a new outbreak of the coronavirus in the country.

The restriction applies to foreigners holding visas or resident permits, as well as to those holding APEC Business Travel Cards.

"The suspension is a temporary measure that China is compelled to take in light of the outbreak situation and the practices of other countries," China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement released today."China will stay in close touch with all sides and properly handle personnel exchanges with the rest of the world under the special circumstances."
