This afternoon, GQ editor in chief Will Welch kicked off "Big Fits from Home," a new show on Instagram Live featuring GQ friends and fam. Every Tuesday at 2pm, Welch will answer your questions and chat live with celebrities, style gods, and GQ correspondents. This week, he talked about what he's listening to in quarantine ( Amen Dunes) and gave a little advice for getting a fit off when you're in lockdown. He also got some workout tips from GQ fitness columnist Joe Holder and compared quarantine beards with our grooming correspondent, Phillip Picardi.
Holder had a lot of good advice for staying healthy, mentally and physically, in these strange and uncertain times. "Movement is key, you've got to move," he noted, even if it's just for what Holder calls an "exercise snack," like a quick set of high knees or jumping jacks. Inspired by GQ Special projects editor slash jump-rope enthusiast Mark Anthony Green, Holder dropped a quick jump rope workout:
Quick, easy to do anywhere, and you'll feel the burn. But the mental aspect of wellness is just as important for Holder right now-remember to listen to your body, put down your phone, and get a good night's sleep.
GQ's grooming guru Picardi joined later to hit us with his socially-distanced grooming tips. He's been FaceTiming with his barber once a week to get advice on how to keep his beard in check, since he can't go in for regular appointments. (Mind the problem areas: cheek line, around the lips, under the neck, and over the ears.) He also shared a few of his favorite products: Aesop's hand balm to offset all the hand-washing, eye masks for long days staring at a screen, and a good scalp brush. And he issued an important reminder: that most barbers and hair stylists are in a particularly difficult situation right now. Most of them are independent contractors, which means they can't file for unemployment. Now more than ever, it's important to find ways to support the people who help you look great, whether you're scheduling remote appointments like Phil or buying a gift card for a future visit.
As for the big fits? Bossman Welch, wearing a jacket by Evan Kinori (who recently talked to GQ about how coronavirus is affecting his work), dispensed two pieces of WFH fashion wisdom. First: "Look in your closet to access the forgotten jawns." Now is the time to reconnect with the fits of yesteryear that haven't received enough love. Second: "Lots of selfies." Your style may have to be socially distant, but you can still share it with the world.
