Continuing its focus on sustainability, Coca-Cola recently introduced the world's first bottle made from recycled ocean plastic waste. Launching in an initial edition of 300 bottles, the innovative bottles are crafted from 25 percent marine waste collected by volunteers during 84 beach cleanups in Spain and Portugal.

Coca-Cola was able to create the bottle through a partnership with Dutch startup Ioniqa Technologies and its PET plastic supplied Indorama Ventures. Ioniqa created a new technology that depolymerizes PET in monomers that can then be re-polymerized into new plastic by Indorama ventures.

The new bottle is part of the beverage purveyor's plans to roll out enhanced recycled content in its products for 2020 in a move to eliminate the concept of single-use plastic and plastic waste altogether. If Coca-Cola is successful it could become the first fast-moving consumer goods company to function without traditional plastic waste packaging.
